The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of disulfiram (DHEA, a medication used for the treatment of chronic kidney disease), in combination with an antabuse, in the treatment of patients with severe liver cirrhosis. A total of 705 patients with severe liver cirrhosis, who were randomly assigned to DHEA and placebo, were followed for 3 years. During this period, patients were followed for 3 months to determine if the treatment effect of DHEA was sustained and to determine if the effect was not due to adverse events.
The study was conducted in a university hospital, followed by a study in a tertiary university hospital, which was registered by the National Agency for the Evaluation of Medicines and Health Products Administration (NAEPH), and approved the study protocol (approval number AIRM/12-1-20-23). Patients and their medical records were reviewed to identify the presence or absence of any serious adverse events.
The study group received DHEA treatment for a total of 705 patients. The most common adverse events were somnolence (11.6%) and flushing (9.7%). The most common treatment effect was dry mouth (1.6%) and insomnia (1.9%). There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of the number of patients who developed adverse events.
The efficacy and safety of the treatment of severe liver cirrhosis are similar to those of other treatments for this condition.
